Do you enjoy numbers the way others enjoy music, poetry or art? Do you enjoy using Mathematics to explain real-world phenomena and solve problems?

Mathematical training develops specific skills and broad analytical expertise, which are valued across all professions. There is also a particular demand for graduates who not only have quantitative skills, but also know how to use them.

This course delivers that sought-after combination – through our teaching style, and our focus on real-world applications of both mathematical and statistical techniques. For example, you’ll use the mathematics computing laboratories as an integral part of your learning process, making your study as much experimental as theoretical.

Our Computing Science and Mathematics division provides a stimulating and supportive learning environment, and we’ve a strong and active research group. Its primary interest is the application of mathematics to biology, economics and life sciences, and we offer combined Honours degrees in the relevant disciplines.

Mathematical Contest in Modelling

Since 2011, the University of Stirling teams have been participating in an international competition run by COMAP (USA). In 2017 over 8,500 teams from all over the world took part. It's a great way to gain research and leaderships skills. In 2017 four of our teams finished in the top 9% in the world.

The University of Stirling Mathematics Society

We have a vibrant Mathematics Society where you can develop further skills through team activities. It's run by students for students.

Stirling students have been highly successful participating in the international Mathematical Contest in Modelling. In 2017, four out of five of our teams were in the top 9% in the world.

Applied Mathematics can also be studied as a Bachelor's degree (UCAS Code G120).

    If English is not your first language you must have one of the following qualifications as evidence of your English language skills:

    • IELTS - 6.0 with 5.5 minimum in each skill
    • Cambridge C1 Advanced (CAE) 169 with minimum of 162 in each skill
    • Cambridge C2 Proficiency (CPE) 180 with minimum 162 in each skill
    • Pearson Test of English (Academic): 54 with 51 in each component
    • IBT TOEFL: 80 with no subtest less than 17

In Semesters 1-3, you will take Mathematics plus two other subjects. Material covered at secondary level is reviewed and applied before being developed further, ensuring a smooth transition from a school teaching approach to a university one.

You’ll take core modules in: Calculus of One and Several Variables; Vectors, Matrices, Complex Numbers and their Application in Geometry and Systems Theory; Statistics and Probability; and Analysis. You can also opt to take an additional mathematics module in Discrete Structures.

In Semesters 4-8, the course covers a broad range of skills. Advanced modules cover the following key areas: mathematical techniques for solving a wide range of problems; the theory underlying these mathematical techniques; and model building, for example, converting real-world problems into mathematical form. This will include projects that allow further development of skills in areas of applied mathematics.

  • Teaching

    We've been awarded five star excellence for our teaching by the QS World University Rankings 2018. Many of the course modules are assessed by means of class tests and an end-of-semester examination.

  • Assessment

    Additional weekly marked assignments are used by tutors and students to monitor progress. In some modules class tests are replaced by projects in which you will solve problems based on real-world data. Typically, in the final semester you will undertake a challenging project or series of problems under the guidance of a project supervisor.

    Scottish/EU Students

    Although you’re liable for annual tuition fees, students domiciled in Scotland or the EU will be able to apply to the Student Awards Agency for Scotland (SAAS) to have tuition fees paid by the Scottish government on their behalf.     Important note for EU students

    The Scottish Government has confirmed that EU students enrolling in the 2019 and 2020 academic year will be entitled to free tuition fees in Scotland. EU students will retain that status for the duration of their four year degree. The future fee status of EU students enrolling in UK universities will depend on the timing and terms of the UK’s exit from the European Union. The University will make decisions on fee levels for EU students enrolling in 2021 when further guidance is available from the Scottish and UK governments, and will publicise information about fee levels and financial support available on our University and Europe information pages.

    While students should be aware this may mean a change from the current position where EU students are treated with equivalence to Scottish students, it is also important to note that any changes would also require changes to existing UK and Scottish legislation. Current indications are that the UK would leave the EU at the earliest in 2020, so any changes would not take effect before the academic year 2020/21.

    Students domiciled in England, Wales and Northern Ireland (RUK)

    The Undergraduate Choice Scholarship provides a £1,000 cash award to all students from England, Wales or Northern Ireland who meet the conditions of their offer and select the University of Stirling as their Firm or Insurance choice on UCAS.

    The University also offers the Undergraduate Merit Scholarship, which is awarded to selected students and provides a £1,000 cash award per year for years 1-3 of study. To be considered for the Merit Scholarship, students require a minimum of AAB at A-level or equivalent.

    In addition, students from England, Wales and Northern Ireland who enter in year 1 and progress successfully through years 2 and 3 will receive our Honours Year Scholarship, which covers the cost of undergraduate tuition fees in the Honours year of study.

Of particular relevance at Stirling is the growing need for graduates with mathematical skills in the biological and environmental sciences. Stirling has a strong record of research in the application of mathematics to biological problems, for example, the spread of diseases in animals, and offers Combined Honours degrees in the relevant disciplines.
